SYNTHESIS OF THE SCIENCE II: FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND

RODA is organizing a two-part workshop on floating wind energy technology as part of its project “Synthesis of the Science: Offshore Wind and Fisheries Interactions” in partnership with the National Marine Fisheries Service. There is currently limited understanding of this emerging technology among fishing industry participants. These workshops are intended to achieve two goals:

  1. Information sharing between the fishing industry and offshore wind technologists, engineers, and developers, including improved evaluation of the implications of the turbines, anchor system, and cables on fishing operations; and
  2. Identify opportunities for fishing experts to partner in research and development for offshore wind technologies that may mitigate impacts to fishing.

RODA will compile questions regarding this technology to share with presenters in order to develop presentations that facilitate fishing industry involvement in other project phases, as well as OSW planning processes more generally.

The workshop will build on previous presentations, including by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Pacific Fishery Management Council, and Maine Roadmap Effort,  with the intention of informing the target audience of fishing experts (industry members, scientists, and managers) and offshore wind technologists and advancing cross-sectoral partnerships.

A final description of these workshops and additional details will be posted soon.

If there are any specific questions regarding floating turbine technology (e.g. cabling, anchors) please let Fiona know.
